Good evening all!
So...I pretty much did eff-all this week. Okay, that is not true, but as far as art goes, I didn't make a whole heck of a lot. Been getting the gardens ready for winter, potting plants for indoors, working, filling orders, and trying not to fall asleep too early...Most nights I don't succeed at that last one.
I had a blast at the zombie pub crawl :) Got wasted and met a lot of zombies! I will have some pictures soon(ish) to share...But, seriously, this is why I don't go out all that often- because I have waaay too much fun, then it takes me two days or so to get back all my energy and bearings. So...I don't think I will be going out for Halloween. I will be working and then working some more.

So...I'm gonna ramble about my week now. You've been fairly warned ;)
on Tuesday, I had to go into work in the early morning...When I got there, I noticed a baby bird hopping around in the road. So, I scooped it up and moved it to safety. I know you are not technically supposed to touch wild baby animals, because I guess the scent of human on them is sometimes enough to make the parents abandon them...But I was *not* going to leave that poor little guy out in harms way. It wasn't hurt, and was certainly about "learning to fly" age. Plus, one of the parent birds was right there, screaming at me the whole time. When I went on break later in the day, the baby and parent were gone, so...I assumed the best (for once)...Plus, I got to hold a baby bird before work! They are sooo cute :)
This morning, I found myself downtown before work, so I ran a few errands, grabbed a cup of coffee, and headed to the cemetery to visit with my namesake (Ms. Emily Dickinson). Some of the grass in the front of the graveyard hadn't been mowed in quite some time, and it was long and brown (but not in a gross way). In that part of the cemetery, the tombstones are very old, many are cracked and crooked. It was so quintessential, and I was silently cursing myself for not having my camera with me. So, I had a nice peacefully creepy morning, writing zombie limericks with Ms Dickinson in the graveyard.
It's strange, though, that a town as busy as Amherst has a "dead spot" (pun intended) right in the center of the center...I don't go to cemeteries and hang out because its cool and slightly gothy...I might be a dork, but I am not a big enough dork to be a goth (sorry goths). I'm just me. I just like that it is peaceful, but not all that lonely. I like that there is history and secrets, and lives past. Plus, even those dead and gone, for so long that there is no one left alive to visit them, still deserve a visitor now and then.
And...that's my ramble.

I have finished up my latest jester- she is Ice Cream themed- though I have yet to scan her in and get prints posted for sale. I will try my very best to get her up ASAP! She's very cute- a black haired harlequin, dreaming of ice cream cones :) Now I am pondering my next jester, and also the next addition to my Dragon Zodiac series (thinking about Taurus)...Also, working on getting more zombie limericks written for the compilation book...I wrote 18 of them last week, and thought with the other 27 plus illustrations that would be sufficient. However, I have since chosen to put a whole bunch more into the compilation book, so...Looks like I have my work cut out for me! Even though they are just silly little rhymes, it is actually rather difficult to make them work just right, and also make them funny (which, in my mind, is the cornerstone of any good limerick). At this point, I am afraid that I will run out of ideas. :( So...I might have to restock my Netflix list with LOTS and LOTS of "research material" aka zombie movies LOL!!

I feel like I should have been far more productive this month. I'm blaming it on the fact that I've spent a lot of time tending to the gardens. I didn't even update my website galleries this month! I suck! Well, I suppose it can wait til June, and there will just be a lot more new art up there!

My motivation to get new art out of my sketchbook and onto canvas/paper has been somewhat low lately- not that I don't LOVE to create, but I do feel some interesting changes coming on, as far as my art goes. I've been in more of a pen and ink mood, and cartoons, too, and have been puttering around with some new Ralphie stuff, and some other cartoon creatures :) Very few final projects though. :\ However, I do have one brand new painting up in my darklingemily etsy shop! This piece is titled "Lurking Dawn" (thanks to Rebecca Brown Martinez for the title- you can check out her etsy shop here- TCsoApCo!)- a dragon perched on some strange plant, in my silhouette style...It is an original 11" x 14" acrylic painting, on gallery wrapped canvas (sides are 3/4" and painted black)- so it is ready to hang! One last important tidbit of info before I go...This Saturday, June 5, I will be out IN PERSON selling my art and other assorted goodies (prints, bookmarks, ACEOs, etc)...I will be at the Spring Craft Fair, located at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Hadley, MA. The fair runs from 8am to 2pm, and there will be vendors of all sorts, a plant sale/swap, pancakes, and a giant tag sale! I will be outside, at a small table loaded with my paintings and such, so come on by and see me! And bring all your filthy rich friends who love art LOL!! Aside from being sleepy, I am *really* craving chocolate, and I don't have any. So...I suffer without :/ On the upside, I think the garden/yard is really starting to look decent, and is not as frustrating to deal with now. Yay!
Now, for some art...I have actually completed the latest zodiac dragon- Gemini- however, I have not listed it or posted it anywhere online yet, as I have a bunch of other art that I have not updated on :) So, I did not want to overwhelm anyone with too much art, heh heh! I have two new ACEO illustrations, and an older painting, all up for auction on eBay!

It's sort of hard to draw when you have gardener's hands...
After about 40 applications of lotion, they are now moving like hands, and not like metal clamps covered in paper...Sometimes I forget to put lotion on, like last night, and I just start drawing. Not the best idea; I messed up two small pieces so terribly, I just put them right in the recycling basket. There was no fixing them. What a travesty. I wonder if it had anything to do with the dry-skin-sliding-across-paper felling- it is a lot like nails on a chalkboard to me. Ugh :) Of course, I do have some art worthy of sharing today! Another new dragon painting, a fairy ACEO, and another older illustration up for auction.
So, this newest dragon painting is titled "Nightengale"- a pale gray dragon, with purple spots, watches twilight descend from a strange, dark flowerstalk...I don't really know what it is about this piece that immediately makes me smell flowers, but it does. Hello all!
This is sad, but...I don't even remember the last time I posted...sometime last week I suppose. I had a very busy weekend visiting my mother, who was up from Atlanta...We took a day trip to the Salem/Marblehead area to visit with my Nana and spend some time by the sea...okay, the harbor, but close enough :) So far, May has been an awfully busy month for me, and it looks like the craziness will continue all month long, into June...Yoy! At least it's nice out, though the warm weather always makes me sleepy.
So...it's art time! I have not had a lot of time to make new pieces, however I do have two new ones to share (why is it always in twos? Who knows...) The first is a mermaid and sea dragon illustration- "Napping Sea Monster"- some of you may have been following the work in progress in my facebook album, but for those of you who haven't, she is all finished up now and listed in my darklingemily etsy shop! A bit about the piece: an original 10" x 8" illustration, in mixed media (acrylic paint, colored pencil, and archival inks on bristol) featuring a beautiful mermaid and a sleeping sea dragon in her arms! It's rather late in my neck of the woods...Well, it's late for me to be tinkering around online and posting stuff, but I'm not all that tired. Also, this post is partially an excuse to put off starting another project. Not that I don't *want* to create, I almost ALWAYS want to, but I am quite sure the focus just isn't there. Lately I have been trying to be mindful of not putting paint to canvas if I know I won;t give it the attention it deserves, in the hopes that I will begin to make more quality art and less mindless crap. Though I suppose that is a point of opinion and taste.

Seeing as I have very little experience with drawing action, this should turn out...interesting. I will try to do the idea justice. Thus, I will be taking my sweet, sweet time on this one. I have a weak spot for all kinds of sorbet, raspberry in particular, so I thought I'd give a shout out to one of my favorite desserts with a pin up :) The title for this one is simply "Raspberry Sorbet" as I have not been feeling all that clever or witty of late...But at least it brings Prince's song to mind. So, as aforementioned, I am working my way out of a bit of a funk. It is not so much an inspiration problem as a motivational one- something I am not very familiar with and prefer not to be- ever. The pictures pile up in my head and in my numerous sketch books, but I seem to be having trouble getting them generated into actual art. I am blaming the beautiful weather and my multitude of work to get done in the gardens...Lots of yardwork to do, good stuff, but tiring! But for now, I am off to motivate and get my latest dragon painting worked on a bit more- there are work in progress photos up in my album on Facebook here if you would like to come by and see :)

Well, I have kind of a lot of stuff to share today, so please bare with me here :)...New Zazzle products, an ACEO auction, a brand new jester, and a new raven too!
I know I am not the best about sharing the latest from my Zazzle shop, but I have a few new things up there now, so I thought I'd post those! How about some brand new art? Yay! I will begin with what's new in my darklingemily etsy shop! Number one- a brand new jester pin up! I've also snuck in some time to get a new raven painted :) I just love these birds, and I could seriously paint them forever; if it weren't for my vast interest in other areas, I probably would! This is "Raven 17"- A curious raven looks skyward...and what are these glowing bits of green everywhere? "Raven 17" is an original acrylic painting, 5" x 7" on a sheet of canvas. So, been working on finishing up the final custom painting from my recent giveaway. It is a Wonderland themed piece, featuring the Cheshire Cat offering Alice some growth-inducing cookies! Now, on to the dragons! I have begun a sub-series of dragons in strange, otherworldy landscapes. I am calling this series "Inklings"- each background is painted before I have any inkling of which Emily dragon will have the best personality to suit it. EEE! I seem to have finally come out of my slump- of course, it's only been 4 days or so, but i t was the longest 4 days I've had in quite some time...I basically did a bunch of spring cleaning, paper work, sketching, and a little moping here and there- read part of a book, watched some movies...Though there is always a ton of stuff I can find to fill my day, I never feel right when I can't make art...But I do know enough to not try to force it out, I just have to let the creative cycle do its thing.
At any rate, I have three brand new, original ACEOs up for auction tonight! I thought I'd start off small (size wise) and work into some bigger pieces...The new ACEOs are up on eBay, each with a starting bid of just $5 (and free shipping on all!). I had a rather bland day today- mostly paperwork and stuff, with a bit of brainstorming and sketching along the way- very boring. But, I do have a rather exciting new zombie painting to show off!!
These are the latest flesh eating monsters! This painting is one of my favorites- it kinda freaks me out.
